Why Vaccinations Matter

Vaccinations train your puppy's immune system to recognize and fight dangerous diseases before they can cause serious harm. Without vaccination, your puppy is vulnerable to illnesses that are often difficult and expensive to treat — and in some cases, fatal.

When your puppy receives a vaccine, the body produces antibodies that stay ready to fight off that specific disease if your puppy is ever exposed to it in the future.

  • Prevent serious, life-threatening diseases
  • Protect other pets in your home
  • Often required for boarding and grooming
  • Foundation of lifelong preventive care

Core vs Non-Core Vaccines

Vaccines are divided into two groups. Core vaccines are recommended for every dog. Non-core vaccines are given based on lifestyle, location, and exposure risk.

Your veterinarian will help you decide which vaccines your puppy needs based on where you live and how your puppy will spend their time.

  • Core: Canine Distemper, Parvovirus, Adenovirus, Rabies
  • Non-core: Bordetella, Leptospirosis, Lyme disease, Canine Influenza

The 10 Essential Vaccinations

Most puppies receive combination vaccines that protect against several diseases in a single injection. Here are the essential vaccines every puppy should receive, along with the diseases they prevent.

  • Canine Distemper — a highly contagious viral disease
  • Canine Parvovirus — attacks the intestinal tract
  • Canine Adenovirus-2 — protects against hepatitis
  • Parainfluenza — contributes to kennel cough
  • Rabies — a fatal disease and legally required in most areas
  • Bordetella bronchiseptica — kennel cough protection
  • Leptospirosis — bacterial infection affecting liver and kidneys
  • Lyme Disease — carried by ticks
  • Canine Influenza — highly contagious respiratory virus
  • Coronavirus — causes gastrointestinal illness in some dogs

The Typical Vaccination Schedule

Puppy vaccinations start at 6–8 weeks and continue with boosters every 2–4 weeks until about 16 weeks old. The schedule depends on the vaccine brand and your puppy's health.

  • 6–8 weeks: First combination vaccine (DHPP)
  • 10–12 weeks: Second combination vaccine (DHPP)
  • 14–16 weeks: Third combination vaccine + Rabies
  • 12 months: Final booster, then boosters every 1–3 years

After Vaccination Care

Most puppies feel completely normal after vaccination. Some may be slightly tired or have mild soreness at the injection site for a day. This is normal and usually resolves quickly.

If your puppy experiences severe allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, contact your veterinarian immediately.

When to See a Vet

Your veterinarian will create a vaccination plan tailored to your puppy's specific needs. Always keep records of your puppy's vaccinations and schedule regular wellness visits to ensure they stay protected throughout life.

Important Note

Always consult your veterinarian before giving your puppy any vaccine. Vaccination schedules may vary depending on your puppy's age, breed, health, and risk factors.
