Start With a Routine

Puppies thrive on routine. Take your puppy out first thing in the morning, after meals, after naps, and before bedtime. A consistent schedule helps your puppy learn when and where to go.

Choose a Designated Potty Spot

Take your puppy to the same spot every time. The familiar scent encourages them to go there. Use a consistent command word so your puppy learns to associate the spot with going potty.

Use Positive Reinforcement

Praise and reward your puppy immediately after they go potty in the right place. Positive reinforcement is far more effective than punishment and strengthens your bond.

Watch for Signs

Learn to recognize the signs that your puppy needs to go out, such as circling, sniffing, whining, or heading toward the door. Respond quickly to prevent accidents.

Handle Accidents Correctly

Accidents are a normal part of house training. Clean them up thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner to remove odors. Never punish your puppy for accidents — this only creates fear and confusion.

Common House Training Challenges

If house training is not progressing, consider these common challenges.

  • Inconsistent schedule or feeding times
  • Not taking your puppy out frequently enough
  • Medical issues such as urinary tract infections
  • Anxiety or stress in the home
  • Not cleaning accidents thoroughly
