Tail Positions

A cat’s tail is a clear indicator of mood. A tail held high signals confidence and happiness. A puffed-up tail indicates fear or aggression. A tail tucked between the legs signals anxiety or submission.

Ear Positions

Forward ears indicate interest and alertness. Flattened or sideways ears signal fear, aggression, or irritation. Pay attention to ear position to gauge your cat’s comfort level.

Eye Signals

Slow blinking is a sign of trust and relaxation. Dilated pupils can indicate excitement, fear, or arousal. A direct, unblinking stare can be a sign of aggression or challenge.

Vocalizations

Cats use a range of vocalizations to communicate. Purring usually indicates contentment, while hissing and growling signal fear or aggression. Meowing is often directed at humans and can indicate a variety of needs.

Body Posture

A relaxed cat has a loose, comfortable posture. An arched back with raised fur signals fear or defensiveness. A crouched, tense posture indicates anxiety or readiness to flee.

Signs of Stress

Signs of stress in cats include hiding, excessive grooming, changes in appetite, and litter box avoidance. If you notice these signs, consult your veterinarian for guidance.
